Serene sea-blue aquamarines, typically clean and generously cut. The easiest path to a large, beautiful Ceylon gemstone.
Aquamarine — the blue variety of beryl — takes its name from the sea, and fine Ceylon stones run from pale sky blue to a deeper, more saturated blue. The crystal is usually clean, which means large, eye-clean aquamarines are far more attainable than sapphires or emeralds of similar size.
Much of the material on the market is heated to remove a greenish cast and settle the blue; as with other beryls, the treatment is stable and generally disclosed only at the higher end. When buying, judge the saturation of the blue rather than the size alone — pale stones are plentiful, while deeper blues are scarce — and check for a cut that keeps the stone bright. Aquamarine remains an affordable way to own a large, beautifully cut gemstone.
