Glowing six-ray stars in purplish-red corundum — genuine star rubies are genuinely rare. Confirm treatment and origin with the dealer on every piece.
Star ruby is the rarest of the star stones — a cabochon-cut ruby with a six-ray star floating across its surface. Genuine star rubies come from a handful of sources including Sri Lanka, Burma and Vietnam, and good examples combine a strong, saturated red body colour with a sharp, well-centred star.
Heating can destroy the fine silk inclusions that create the star, so star rubies are often unheated — but treatment should still be disclosed, and fissure-filled material is not unusual in the wider market. Judge the star in person or on video under a focused light: it should be clearly visible and move cleanly across the dome. Because fine star rubies are genuinely scarce, compare carefully and treat unusually low prices with caution.
