A sharp six-ray star gliding across a smooth cabochon dome: Ceylon star sapphires are famous for good reason. Always ask the dealer for a star video before committing.
Star sapphires display asterism: a six-ray star that glides across the dome of a cabochon-cut stone as it moves in the light. Ceylon star sapphires are among the most famous in the world, traditionally cut as smooth cabochons to bring the star to the surface.
The quality of the star — its sharpness, straightness and how centrally it sits — matters more than almost anything else, followed by the body colour and the translucency of the stone. A faint, off-centre or blurred star has little value relative to a crisp one. Photographs rarely do them justice, so ask the dealer for video in natural light under a single directional source. Synthetic stars and treated stones exist; for valuable pieces, certification is the safeguard.
