Buy Tsavorite Garnets in Beruwala, Sri Lanka

Electric green tsavorite garnet — rarer in fine sizes than emerald, with superb brilliance. Compare greens side by side; the vivid stones go first.

Tsavorite is the green variety of grossular garnet, discovered in the 1960s in the borderlands between Kenya and Tanzania. Its colour ranges from a light, grassy green to a deep, intense green that rivals fine emerald — with the bonus of greater toughness and, usually, fewer visible inclusions.

Fine tsavorite is rare in larger sizes; most stones are under two carats, and prices rise steeply as size increases. Garnets are generally not treated, so the colour you see is the colour of the stone. When comparing, prioritise saturation and brightness over size: a smaller, vivid stone is more desirable than a larger, darker one. At around 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale it stands up well to everyday wear.

What to check when buying tsavorite garnets

  • Judge saturation against other greens — tsavorite's value is in vivid, bright green rather than size.
  • Check larger stones for a darker, muddy tone; many big tsavorites go too dark and lose their sparkle.
  • Ask about treatment; garnets are generally untreated, but confirm it on the report for expensive stones.
  • Look at the cut: a shallow stone can wash out colour, and tsavorite's beauty depends on depth.
