Bright golden and lemon-yellow Ceylon sapphires, traditionally worn for prosperity and priced well below fine blues. Filter the shelf by colour depth and carat.
Yellow sapphire — the “golden” sapphire of the trade — ranges from pale lemon to rich golden yellow. It has been worn and valued in South Asia for centuries, and it remains one of the most affordable ways into fine corundum: strong, bright yellows cost a fraction of comparable blues.
Heating is the norm for yellow sapphire and is used to develop the colour from pale rough. When buying, look for even saturation and a lively tone; greenish or brownish modifiers and a pale, washed-out core reduce appeal. Yellow stones conceal inclusions well, so cut and brilliance deserve as much attention as clarity. Larger stones are relatively common — yellow is one of the sapphire colours where a five-carat stone is a realistic goal on a moderate budget.
